Auto-immune condition is thought to be the main cause of Vitiligo. In this condition your immune system does not work properly. Instead of fighting bacteria which are foreign cells, the immune system starts producing anti-bodies that attack the healthy cells of your body which results in loss of pigments or in some cases the immune system detects organelles that are already present in the body as foreign bodies and fight against them.
Immune system protects the human body from infections and diseases by identifying and killing the pathogens and tumor cells. It detects and distinguishes agents, from viruses to parasitic worms from the organism's own healthy cells and tissues and fights against them in order to function properly. Immune system disorder can cause diseases like auto-immune disease, inflammatory disease and cancer.
In auto-immune disease the body detects it own cells as foreign bodies and attack them impairing their function. In other words Auto-immune disease is the overactive immune response towards one’s own organelles of the body which are normally present like cells and tissues.
So doctors think that if you have Vitiligo skin disorder it is possible that your immune system produces anti-bodies that destroy pigment cells (melanocytes) and result in loss of color which leads to uneven white patches on the skin. The auto-immune diseases that are believed to cause Vitiligo skin disorder include:
- Hyperthyroidism: A condition which produces excessive amount of thyroid that circulates in the body
- Alopecia areata: Patches of baldness
- Pernicious anemia: A low level of red blood cells caused by the failure of the body to absorb vitamin B12
In which the immune system produces anti-bodies which destroy and damage pigment cells (melanocytes
